As we welcome winter here in the northwestern hemisphere I was inspired to create
something a little different. What began as an exercise in figure drawing transformed
into an unexpected interpretation of the Welsh mother goddess Rhiannon - she who has
been my matron muse for many years.
Many view Rhiannon as a bright fey spirit - the mischievous lady of birds and
horses who tempted and won the heart of King Pwyll. But what came to me when I began
this was of her aspect as Queen of Annwn: the Celtic Otherworld synonymous with the
realms of the dead. For all her associations with death Rhiannon is also a potent symbol
of fertility - a moon deity usually symbolized by a white horse, who can aid in
overcoming enemies, exercising patience, working magick, and enhancing dream work.
