An original painting made for display at Capricon XXIII, where I had the great pleasure
to serve as Artist Guest of Honor in 2003. The convention's theme was "Gods vs. Monsters", and
I wanted to create something relevant to that theme specifically for the event. As it was
just before Valentine's Day, I thought Eros would be a good choice.
The title refers to the story of Cupid and Psyche, at the point where Psyche breaks her
promise not to look at her mysterious new husband as he sleeps, only to find that he
is in fact the god of Desire. I chose to show him not as the cherubic Cupid but as Eros,
son of Night - the dark elder god referenced in Aristophanes' The Birds whose power
was so great that neither mortal nor deity could resist him.
